Fins Letting League Act On Merling Situation

During the off-season so far, there has been an array of arrests among Dolphins players. The list formerly included Ronnie Brown (DUI), Will Allen (DUI), Tony McDaniel (domestic battery).

That troubling list now has a new member, Philip Merling.

Merling was arrested late Wednesday night for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend.

Merling reportedly struck his pregnant girlfriend on Wednesday night, and was released from jail on Thursday.

Despite this flurry of negative activity on Merling’s part, he was still able to attend the first day of OTA’s on Friday.

Today, after all of the practices were over, head coach Tony Sparano had only a few words to say on Merling’s predicament:

That’s a situation right now that we’re dealing with closely with the league with, trying to gather facts, trying to gather information, but it really is a league situation right now, the league is handling this, We’re going to let the process play itself out right now and see what the league decides down the road.

While Merling continues to practice with the team, it obviously looks like the Fins are letting this one play out. I highly doubt that the team will release Merling at this point. He provides good depth on the defensive line, and competition for jared Odrick for the last remaining starting defensive end spot.
