Dolphins Take Guard John Jerry In 3rd Round

The Dolphins again shocked everybody by selecting guard John Jerry from Ole Miss.

Jerry is 6’5″, 328 lbs, and is a dominant run blocker. It looks like he will compete at both guard positions, and even though at first glance it looks like guard was not a massive need, we do need a solid starter at both guard positions, as both the starting right and left guard spots are open right now.

Here is a scouting report on Jerry from Draft Countdown:

Outstanding height and bulk with long arms — Powerful and naturally strong — Stout at the point of attack — Gets a great push in the run game — Dominant once locked on — Solid instincts — Durable — Has lots of quality experience — Offers some versatility — Great bloodlines.

Inconsistent — Heavy feet — Is not a natural knee-bender — Not very quick or agile — Struggles with speed — Limited range and doesn’t do well in space — Not very explosive off the snap — Motor runs hot and cold — May lack a killer instinct — Conditioning and stamina are issues.

Saw action at both right tackle and guard during his college career but will probably fit best inside at the next level — A prototypical mauler with rare size who should excel in a power offense.
