Mock Draft Among Blogs: Pick 27

The Cowboys do not have a dire need at any starting position and can justify drafting the best player available here at pick #27. Though they could use an infusion of youth along the offensive line and would consider Anthony Davis and Maurkice Pouncey here, the raw playmaking skills of Pierre-Paul would just be too tough for Wade Phillips and Jerry Jones to pass up.

With the 27th pick in the 2010 Mock Draft Among Blogs, the Dallas Cowboys select:

***Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida***

Yes, the team has DeMarcus Ware, one of the best players in the league who is a beast at outside linebacker. And yes, Anthony Spencer came on strong in ’09 to solidify the strong side OLB spot. But in Wade Phillips’ 3-4, you simply cannot have enough good pass rushers. Drafting Pierre-Paul would give the team another option on nickel and dime sub-packages. With Ware and Spencer starting, Coach Phillips and staff can take the time to develop Pierre-Paul’s pass-rushing skills as a situational defensive end, while he learns the nuances of playing OLB.

Last April, the Cowboys took a pair of college DEs in the 4th round, Victor Butler and Brandon Williams. After releasing veteran Greg Ellis, Butler and Williams were expected to hold down the backup duties for Ware and Spencer. Williams tore his ACL early in the preseason, and Butler made some nice plays as a third-down DE early in the season. Fortunately, a banged up Ware was able to finish the season. Although the Cowboys hate to take their best player off the field, Ware could use more breathers throughout each game. Pierre-Paul would provide them an another option to Butler, Williams, and Steve Octavien.

The Dallas defense finished strong against the run and second in the league overall in terms of scoring. The next step to becoming a dominating D would be to force more turnovers by providing consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Taking the time to mold a guy like Pierre-Paul could definitely help in that department. Again, he would have the opportunity to play right away in sub-packages and could play a vital role in keeping Ware/Spencer fresh.

The San Diego Chargers, and its representative Bolt Hype, are on the clock.
