Mock Draft Among Blogs: Pick 25

The Ravens have done something they rarely do this offseason; fill their needs through free agency and the trade market.  Trading for Anquan Boldin gave the team a #1 receiving threat for the first time in the franchise’s short history, adding to the already bolstered receiving corps following the signing of Donte Stallworth.

After two defensive linemen left the team as free agents (Justin Bannan, Dwan Edwards), the Ravens went ahead and signed a replacement within days (Cory Redding).

With spots filled, the team can again, as it seems they can do every year, draft for talent and depth. No first-round prospect still on the board defines that better for the Ravens than…

With the 25th pick in the 2010 Mock Draft Among Blogs, the Baltimore Ravens select:

***Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma***

The Ravens are average for the most part at tight end. Todd Heap is a great pass-catcher when he’s healthy, as is L.J. Smith. Both are good blockers, and third-string Edgar Jones helps out with blocking from time to time.  Gresham can catch the ball (950 yards, 14 TD in 2008) and has been known to be a solid blocker.

His size (6’6″, 261 pounds) and his versatility are huge factors that make him a top tight end prospect. Many teams may pass on the former Sooner because of his torn ligaments that kept him out of action in 2009, but the natural ability and work ethic as a player that the Ravens like so much is shown by Gresham’s workouts and his ability to come back to football so quickly.

Since tight end is not a huge, pressing need for the team, picking Gresham is a good investment, as he can make both an immediate impact, and eventually become a main feature in purple and black.

The Arizona Cardinals, and its representative Voice of the Cardinals, are on the clock.
