Mock Draft Among Blogs: Pick 13

In 2009, Mike Singletary’s first season as the 49ers head coach was highlighted by his debate between quarterbacks Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. Smith appeared to win the job as San Francisco’s 8-8 season ended. Defensively, led by stud linebacker Patrick Willis, the 49ers were fourth in the NFL in points allowed (17.6 points per game).

So what direction does the team take with the 11th pick in the NFL Draft? We reached out to Drew Kerr of Niners Nation for his expertise. While we received a pick, we’re still waiting a few paragraphs on why they selected this player.

With the 12th pick in the 2010 Mock Draft Among Blogs, the San Francisco 49ers select:

While we await Kerr’s reasoning on taking Spiller, here is Spiller’s scouting report per Scott Wright of DraftCountdown.com.

Great athlete — Phenomenal speed and quickness with an amazing burst — Tremendous acceleration and is actually faster with the pads on — Extremely elusive and a real terror in space — Excellent change of direction and good balance — Terrific vision and patience — Able to get around the corner with ease — Strong and runs pretty hard for his size — Soft, natural hands with nice body control and ball skills — A pass catching threat out of the backfield and in the slot — Smart and a hard worker with  top-notch intangibles — An  outstanding return man.

Does not have the size you’d prefer — Isn’t very physical — Prefers to bounce everything outside — Dances too much — Won’t pick up the tough yards — Not much of a blocker — Wasn’t a workhorse in college and won’t be able to carry the load in the NFL — Durability’s a concern.

The Seattle Seahawks and its representative, Dave Krieg’s Strike Beard, are on the clock.

  1. He would compliment Frank Gore nicely.

  2. Can’t shake the feeling that they can’t use more help elsewhere. But I guess they are taking the best player on the board
