Draft Watch: Rolando McClain

This is the start of a series of posts by me. I’m going to take about 10 prospects that the Dolphins should be interested in, and then make a post about them. There benefits, risks, and more.

I thought a good start would be my #1 pick, Rolando McClain, an inside linebacker out of the University of Alabama.

McClain was born in Decatur, Alabama, a city in north Alabama along the Tennessee river. He was voted to the All-South team in high school, and was named a Parade Magazine All-American, before attending the University of Alabama, where he started as a freshman. He went on to have a stellar collage career.

McClain stands at 6’4, 258 pounds. Pretty big for a linebacker. However, he is also much, much quicker than the average ‘backer. He won the Buktus Award following the season, which is given to the nations best linebacker, as well as being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.  He also was a semi-finalist for the Lombardi and Bednarik awards, given to the NCAA’s best defensive players.

Why We Draft Him: I think he would be a nice fit in Nolan’s defense. He’s almost a cross between Brian Urlacher  Ray Lewis. Lewis stands at 6’1, 250 lbs, slightly smaller than McClain, but speed wise, I think they are very similar. Urlacher is 6’4 258 lbs. The exact same size as McClain. Also, we are in desperate need of a LB. Porter’s as good as gone, Taylor is getting up their in age, and are depth at that position is not good. McClain would fix that immediately.  Parcells is known to draft linebackers early, so I can definitely imagine McClain in the Aqua and Orange.

Why We Don’t Draft Him: I’ve heard people say we should go with a WR with our 1st pick. Obviously, that’s a area of need, but I think we’d be better exploring the Free Agent market for a receiver, and go with a linebacker #1 instead. Also, McClain is leaving ‘Bama after his junior year. Some players have had issues when they leave early, but I don’t see that as being a problem for McClain.

In conclusion, i believe McClain is the best linebacker out there, and if he’s available, I would be shocked and angry if the Fins don’t pick him.

  1. Did you see Karlos Dansby has expressed interest in signing with Miami?
