From wide receiver to shutdown corner, former Utah Ute, and current Miami Dolphins second round pick, Sean Smith has experienced a lot in his football career. Whether it was leading his high school team, Blair High School, to its best record in 10 years during his senior year, all the while garnering All-Conference, All-State, and All-American honors for his efforts.
His college career offered a different look on things. Smith was redshirted his freshman year, and during his redshirt freshman year, he played the first 11 games at his normal position, wide receiver, but he then made a switch that Miami Dolphins fans worldwide are glad he did. This 6’3 monster of a man made the position switch to cornerback, where he is playing with the Dolphins now.
Over his career at Utah, Smith recorded 9 interceptions, and earned All-MWC honors for his outstanding play in his junior year.
Now, Smith is with the Dolphins and ready to help the Dolphins win in any way possible. Check out the interview I had with him below:
Brant Houghton: How has training camp gone so far?
Sean Smith: It’s been really exciting, camps been great. There’s really a lot to learn here. I’m getting better everyday.
BH: Has Coach Sparano been running as tough of a camp as he has been rumored to?
SS: Well, I have nothing to compare it to except for college so I’m not quite sure yet. The heat has been really bad, and I don’t think I’ve ever sweat this much in my life! You definitely have to be in good shape down here.
BH: How are you dealing with the three-way cornerback competition between yourself, Vontae, and Eric Green?
SS: I’m just going out and competing, what happens happens. All three of them (Vontae Davis, Eric Green, and Will Allen) are great guys, and I’ve really learned a lot from all of them.
BH: How are you handling all of the hype surrounding both yourself, and Vontae Davis, some people are expecting you guys to be a better duo than, and , the best cornerback duo in Dolphins history!
SS: I haven’t really heard anything about any hype.I just want to go out and do my job, hopefully we play the coaches want us to play.
BH: What are your goals for the upcoming year?
SS: I want to be the best player out there. I want to reach my full potential, and show the team that I’m worth the money that they spent on me. And hopefully I go out and exceed everybody else’s expectations as well.
BH: How are you handling the heat down in?
SS: The humidity is very surprising. It’s been really hot down here.
BH: What was the first thing that you spent that big signing bonus that your agent got you on?
SS: I haven’t really spent that much actually. Really the only thing was that I took my agent, David Canter, and his family out to dinner, since he has been paying for my meals and stuff for a little while.
BH: What are your expectations for this Dolphins team this year?
SS: We want to be the best team in the NFL. We want to get to the next level and win the Super Bowl this year.
Good luck Sean this season and the rest of your career, we hope you stay in Miami for the whole thing, we are looking forward to watching you shut down the best in the game.
We would like to send a quick thanks to David Canter, Sean’s agent, for hooking us up with this interview, it would not be possible without him, and to Sean, for taking the time out of his day and answering these questions in the middle of training camp!
